Retiree Health Care Benefits Continue to Decline

Employer-based retirement health care insurance benefits continue to decline, according to recent industry reports.

Many retirees have been able to rely on private or state employer-based retirement health benefits for supplemental health care coverage while on Medicare in the past, but this is becoming less common.

Employer-based health-related benefits can provide important coverage for the gaps that exist in Medicare programs. Additional coverage benefits can alleviate the cost-sharing requirements and deductibles associated with Medicare. Caps on the amount that can be spent out-of-pocket, often associated with supplemental coverage, are also often helpful for retirees.

Overall, supplemental retiree health and medical benefits sponsored by a private or municipal employer have helped many retirees cope with high medical costs often incurred in retirement.

The Kaiser Family Foundation recently reported, however, that the number of large private employers-considered employers with 200 or more employees-offering retiree healthcare benefits has dropped from 66 percent in 1988 to 23 percent in 2015.

Companies that do continue to offer retiree health benefits have been making changes aimed at reducing the cost of benefits, including:

Instituting caps on the amount of the provider’s financial liability

Shifting from defined benefit to defined contribution plans

Offering retiree health care benefits through Medicare Advantage plan contracts

Creating benefit programs through private health insurance exchanges

State employers have also not been immune to the trend, but the type and level of coverage being offered by most states is significantly different than retirement health care coverage being offered by large companies.

Unlike many private employers, state governments continue to offer some level of retiree health care benefits to help attract and retain talented workers, according to a report titled “State Retiree Health Plan Spending,” published by The Pew Charitable Trusts and the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation in May, 2016.

With the exception of Idaho, all states currently offer newly-hired state employees some level of retirement health care benefits as part of their benefits package, according to the report. Of the states offering retiree medical benefits, 38 have made the commitment to contribute to health care premiums for the coverage being offered. State employers are, however, also making changes to the retirement health care insurance benefits they provide to state workers.

Health Anxiety and Solutions

It’s always important to take care of one using all the principles of good health. Regular check-ups, proper nutrition and healthful living all enable one to keep on top of their health in a careful yet reasonable way. Often one becomes overly concerned with health issues and caught up in a cycle of health worries. One health issue is reconciled when another immediately pops up to take its place. These worries become all encompassing and exhausting after a while.

Eventually, the individual realizes that this cycle of health anxieties has intruded upon the quality of their life. A dark cloud, always hovering over daily living, this intrusive form of anxiety has to be addressed. One begins by determining why this is occurring, what purpose it serves and how to interrupt this behavior.

Reason for Health Anxiety

Health worries actually serve a purpose and this purpose is not difficult to detect if one looks deep enough into this pattern of behavior. Often this pattern involves the brain distracting from specific emotions which the individual finds difficult to address.

Many emotions are so overwhelming, such as anger, grief or fear, that the brain looks for ways to distract. Health worries fit the bill because when one worries intensely about their health, there is little room to address an upsetting emotion.

Health worries blanket every other thought and this WORKS. This is the perfect distraction from unsettling emotions. When one worry is reconciled, another takes it place to veil the unaddressed emotion. Each health worry has a strong purpose, as it masks the true upsetting emotion, which is much more difficult to face in the long run.

Solution

– Recognition and acknowledgment of the Health Anxiety habit, one worry quickly following another in a noticeable loop that never ends. Awareness of this cycle is always the first step to reconciliation of the issue.

– Determining if this health worries is a true physical problem by visiting one’s primary physician and ruling out a definite physical cause for the difficulty. Always rule out a physical cause before assuming it is merely health anxiety.

– Noticing that these health worries settle down when you become intensely interested in another topic or swept into a new relationship, job or cause.

– Identify your patterns. Do you experience twinges of symptoms that often jump from one area of the body to another? Do you find yourself overestimating physical intrusions and instantly jump to the conclusion that they signify danger or warrant the attention of an alert?

– Find interests that involve your entire being. Lose yourself in things that allow you little time for inward thinking. True illness does not surface through boredom as do these behaviors. True health problems do not generally follow the same time table as health anxieties do. Health worries are stronger during times of boredom and when one lacks interests. An intelligent mind requires challenges and goals.

– Activity is an important therapeutic tool against health worries. Exercise and movement invigorate and stimulate the mind and body in a positive way. Endorphins are released and Serotonin levels are boosted naturally when activity is a part of a daily routine. Moderate walking, jogging, tennis, swimming and dancing are all helpful activities that bring forth positive results.

Nutrition is also essential to good health which in itself helps eliminate the strong habit of negative thinking, often concerning health worries. When eating properly, Serotonin levels are naturally boosted and blood sugar levels remain stable. This helps settle down an over-reactive mind, leading to a lessening in health anxieties.

– Talk back to the brain by firmly telling it to stop when health worries enter the mind. Shift into a more positive mode of thinking because you always have a choice in what you think about.

Redefining Health in the 21st Century

we can’t define, we can’t find; for our definition determines our destination. One of humanity’s greatest debacle is the allegiance to history as a standard for the present and the future. Humanity is so much indebted to old thoughts to the point where, thinking something new seems like a disloyalty to the legends of old. History should not be a status quo or an imperative standard for the present and the future, but an inspiration for the correction of the present and the redirection of the future for a better destiny for mankind. With respect to achieving health for all in the 21st century, humanity must outgrow old thoughts and ways, to the expounding of new methods, approaches, ideologies, and strategies in securing health for mankind. “The significant problems we are facing cannot be solved at the same level of thinking we where at when we created them.

In the past, health was defined as having both body and mind working in good order, free from diseases and pains. If this assertion has been unable to provide humanity with insight on securing health for humanity, then it is expedient for humanity to think out of the status quo. There is no way humanity can resolve the health challenges of the 21st century except in the courage of exploring the unknown. With respect to the 21st century health plan, health is defined as an integrated state of being, of the human body, soul, and spirit functioning in absolute soundness. Thus, health is not necessarily the absence of pains or physical symptoms of sicknesses and diseases. There are individuals with no symptoms of pains, sickness and diseases, yet they are close to their grave. There are equally people who died without having any physical symptoms of pains or disease. Though they seemed to be fine, yet they died suddenly because they were not healthy.

Health is much more than the absence of pains or disease, but an integrated state of being with the human body, soul, and spirit functioning in absolute soundness. Health is an integrated effect with a cause; which implies, health is not a coincidence or an accidental occurrence but the resultant effect of the relative functioning of the human body, soul and spirit in absolute soundness. Let me make this clear, health is not a challenge we can resolve by our shallow efforts. That is why despite all human efforts in achieving health, health has remained a severe challenge. To achieve health for all in the 21st century, humanity must stop joking. We must realize that, we are dealing with a challenge which if not resolved, billions of humans may be wiped out before the end of this century. For health to be achieved in the 21st century, humanity must adopt a more comprehensive and integrated approach taking into consideration the total human being; body, soul and spirit. I hope by now we are civilized enough to know that the human being is not an animal but a complex being with three related dimensions (body, soul and spirit).Any health plan which focuses only on one dimension of the human being will end in failure. A human being must improve in his body, soul and spirit to enjoy health.
